Study Abroad

Faculty in the Department of Modern & Classical Languages do not require, but strongly encourage students to spend time in the country where the language that they are learning is spoken.

There are many advantages to being immersed in a culture and having the opportunity to interact with and to communicate on a daily basis with people living in other parts of the world. Language majors and minors have studied in Canada, France, Germany, Chile, Costa Rica, Ecuador and Spain through universities with which Saint Vincent College has a cooperating relationship.

Saint Vincent College has an established program of study with Cuauhnahuac Instituto Colectivo De Lengua y Cultura, located in Cuernavaca, Mexico. Students can earn between six and nine credits in Spanish from Saint Vincent College over a period of four to six weeks during the summer. Through the years, several students have participated in this program and have enjoyed experiencing the Mexican culture firsthand as they have the option of living with carefully selected families.

Saint Vincent College has also established a semester program of study at the Cuauhnahuac Language Institute. Grammar, conversation, Mexican history, and Latin American literature and culture are part of the regular program of study. Students do, however, have the opportunity to design their own program of study to meet their individual needs and specific interests. Individually designed programs must have the approval of Dr. Doreen Blandino, Chairperson of the Department of Modern & Classical Languages. Advanced students may enroll in internship programs in medicine, law, business, or education while studying Spanish in Cuernavaca, Mexico.

Several Saint Vincent College students have earned credits in areas other than foreign language through recognized international studies program. Some students have studied in Australia, Austria, England, Italy, Ireland, and Wales and have received credits in their major fields of study. Students have also earned credits through participation in Saint Vincent College sponsored study tours of short duration to China, Japan, and Taiwan.

Students enrolled at Saint Vincent College are eligible to apply for the Andreoli Summer Traveling Scholar Awards. Scholars must use the award for an educational experience during the summer between the junior and senior years. Saint Vincent College makes award from the Andreoli Scholar Endowment that was established by Elizabeth and Tom Andreoli ( C'55, Sc.D. '87 [hon]) to support special educational opportunities that will broaden students' horizons and deepen their experience beyond the formal classroom setting.
