I'm currently in the process of applying to spend the second year of my degree at an American or Canadian university, and since I don't live stateside I'm looking for some information.

What should I look for in an American University? When you apply to a higher educational institution what do you look for? Are there any sort of league tables which compare how well the establishments compare against each other?

I'm looking at the following universities (you must choose 4) in the following order:

* University of California
* University at Buffalo (SNYC)
* UNC at Chapel Hill
* University of Alberta (Canada)

Does anybody study at any of the above, or do you know anybody I could get in touch with who studies there? Are there any good websites to help with the process of deciding which uni is best, we have various websites that detail facilities, entertainment etc.

Also is there anybody here whose spent a year away from their 'home' university studying abroad?

I'm doing English Language & Linguistics so specialist knowledge about English courses would be very advantagous!

Help a poor lonely guy out!

It really depends on what feild you will be studying/majoring in that best determins which school you go to.

Some Universities in the US specialize in different areas of experties.

If you want a good foundation for the new computer age (ie Networking, Computer Science, Computer Programming, Server Management, etc) I would suggest ITT They offer Batchelor of Science degrees and even Masters Degrees.

If you are looking into Graphical Artist schooling (ie 2D, 3D, Annimation, etc) or to become a certified Chef then I would suggest the Arts Institute

Both schools have campuses all over the United States and are fully accredited and they have a good reputation of getting you a good job after you graduate.

There are certain distinguished universities. Personally, a community college doesn't do.

UNC -> Very nice university. Raliegh is VERY VERY VERY nice. Krispy Kreme's headquarters is just a ballpark away in Winston-Salem.

UC -> THere are 3 campuses I think... Irvine, LA (UCLA), and Berkeley (awesome)

University of Buffallo and Alberta are not good compared to the UCs and UNC...

Chapel Hill is pretty good, but Berkeley is much better. Check out UVa, also.

I would only apply to colleges on the top 25 list. The rest in the US aren't distinguished, really.

Below are the best colleges in the US (4 year undergrad.)
1. Harvard University (MA)
Princeton University (NJ)
3. Yale University (CT)
4. University of Pennsylvania
5. Duke University (NC)
Massachusetts Inst. of Technology
Stanford University (CA)
8. California Institute of Technology
9. Columbia University (NY)
Dartmouth College (NH)
11. Northwestern University (IL)
Washington University in St. Louis
13. Brown University (RI)
14. Cornell University (NY)
Johns Hopkins University (MD)
University of Chicago
17. Rice University (TX)
18. University of Notre Dame (IN)
Vanderbilt University (TN)
20. Emory University (GA)
21. University of California – Berkeley
22. Carnegie Mellon University (PA)
University of Michigan – Ann Arbor
University of Virginia
25. Georgetown University (DC)
Univ. of California – Los Angeles

you can find a US News issue on them.

If you want the best deal on public universities, most people in the know the UCs (except Irvine), UNC, UVa, and UM are the best.

Uni of Penn doesn't count because it is private and an ivy league.

Try some Ivy Leagues too.
